Niggly Cave in central Tasmania near the town of Maydena has been penetrated to a depth of greater than 400 metres. Part of the extensive Junee-Florentine karst area, the cave was only discovered in 1994. With on-going explorations Niggly Cave has been technically absorbed into the Growling Swallet Cave system. On August 1 , 2022, an elite team of nine cavers from the Southern Tasmanian Caverneers set a new record by successfully connecting a newly discovered cave, named ‘Delta Variant,’ to the Niggly/Growling Swallet Cave system, taking the record for Australia’s deepest known cave to an anticipated 401 vertical metres.
